Video Killed the Radio Star – The Buggles
Growing up, I listened to this song frequently. It’s made a recent reemergence in my life, and I quite enjoy the danceable beat. The lyrics become more and more relevant as technology advances, too. However, The Buggles weren’t the first ones to make this song known to me…
Video Killed the Radio Star – The Presidents of the United States of America
This is the version of the song I grew up with. The Buggles one has a distinctly different tune, and I think I prefer it – but the PUSA one is more familiar to me. It’ll always have a special place in my heart.
Jumper – Third Eye Blind
More likely than not, I’ve heard this song before. But it wasn’t until recently that I started playing it in earnest. Like Semi-Charmed Life, Jumper is a song with an upbeat tune that has lyrics with a deeper meaning. However, unlike the former, Jumper is noticeably more optimistic. The lines right before the chorus are beautifully hopeful.
With Or Without You – U2
Like Video Killed the Radio Star, this song is one that I became well familiar with in my youth. The opening notes have burned themselves into my brain. As with Jumper, I’ve taken up listening to this one more and more lately. I can still remember every line, but I’d forgotten how pretty the music is. And Bono’s voice is just so powerful.
Stick Season – Noah Kahan
This song is more recent; it’s been playing with some regularity on the radio. I’ve taken to listening to it when I go on walks. My current spring setting isn’t the same as the fall one that the song sings about, but the early days of April with the leafless trees make it feel immersive regardless.
