Yeah, maybe I’m pushing the rules of “Halloween movies,” but I’d say this one absolutely counts! And maybe I needed something a little lighter after Pearl, sue me!
Death Becomes Her is a comedy-fantasy film starring Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn as friends-turned-rivals, with Bruce Willis trapped in the middle of their feud. Magic and jealousy collide, but this movie doesn’t give us the standard love triangle fight! Madeline and Helen are the true couple, even if Ernest makes out as the hero!
Featuring one of the coldest jump cuts in movie history early on, DBH goes on to show not only its comedic legs but a surprising amount of decent CGI for 1992. The cast is brilliant, the magic system is great, and the buddy-cop vibes of Mad and Hel once they get over their feud is just fantastic.
The church in the final scene made me mistakenly hope, for a brief moment, that Mad and Hel were getting married, but nope, it’s just the reveal of the true secret of everlasting life! Good for you, Ernest.
I found this interesting clip of Goldie Hawn explaining an alternate ending for the movie, which doesn’t quite seem to fit its vibes. The message remains in the OG, even if the two leads refuse to accept it!
Such a fun watch. Hope I don’t have anything too traumatizing to balance this one out tomorrow!
