Overview
I’m almost glad TotJ was subpar – it dropped my expectations for TotE, resulting in me enjoying it all the more. There’s a wonderful nostalgia in the old TCW animation, as well as the return of so many familiar faces.
I don’t have any complaints about Morgan’s episodes. She was given a strong backstory, and I love neat SW storylines that lead so perfectly into other canon materials. The origin of her devotion to Thrawn was exactly what I hoped for.
And then there’s Barriss’s episodes. Technically, I don’t have any critiques for what the episodes were – I’ve been craving Barriss’s redemption since day one, and I genuinely didn’t expect this show to let her live! My initial post about this show is just littered with my panic.
But I expected a little more from Barriss. A deeper fall into the dark side, so to speak. I’m still a bit disappointed that we never saw Luminara, and that Barriss didn’t mention her once during her time with the Inquisitors. I had expectations that Luminara’s death would push Barriss in one of two ways: either further into the dark side or determinedly into the light.
As much as I liked Barriss becoming a Jedi again – and I do like it, I promise! – part of me had hoped she’d end this show still mired in the dark side. Then, when she reemerged in season 2 of Ahsoka, Ahsoka would have to redeem her friend, doing with Barriss what she was never able to do with Anakin. I just think the parallel would’ve been great.
In the end, I really can’t complain. This is almost ideally what I wanted – for Barriss to end TotE alive, with the implication that she will see Ahsoka again in the latter’s show. Given Barriss’s fate here – and her implied survival – I’m excited for Ahsoka. I’ve been craving a proper reunion between these two for years! And there’s a real possibility of us getting canon Barrissoka. Season 2 could open with Ahsoka musing about Barriss, talking about her to Sabine, building up Barriss’s reemergence in Ahsoka’s life, the reiginition of their friendship… and maybe something else too?
Agh, but given my luck with SW couples, they’re probably going to have some dumb line about being “sisters” to each other and then I’ll have to throw the whole show away. But, as I said in my first TotE blog post – that’s what fanfic is for!
