“Funeral Dress”: Writing Sample #01

“Funeral Dress”: Writing Sample #01

Once upon a time, I was the treasurer of my college’s creative writing club. This meant that, if we had any funds, I would’ve been in charge of them. Although I graduated before that happened, I was told I’m still allowed to carry the title.

My biggest claim to fame is that I arranged a Sharknado movie night for my club – and that went very well, mind you. I was the only one who had seen it before, so I was thrilled to share it!

All that being said – recently, I visited my friends at college. I was invited to rejoin the club during my brief time there, and I was more than happy to do so. The activities for that night consisted of a writing contest – we all had 30 minutes to write about anything. After the time was up, we would read snippets of our stories and anonymously vote.

We all received various prizes, but I’m quite fond of the “Very Best of Outlaw County” CD that I walked away with.

For my writing piece, I started with a prompt I came up with a while back. From there, I just ran with it. I structured my piece as the first chapter of a book, although it did end up a tad shorter than the average

I also wasn’t sure what genre I wanted my writing sample to be. Because of this, I purposefully kept it vague and focused on the characters instead. If I were to continue this, I’d probably make it urban fantasy-themed – maybe add some vampires or other supernatural creatures. But I did enjoy the characters I came up with, and their dynamics. I think I’ll probably pick up this story thread again at some point.

Loosely titled “Funeral Dress,” here’s my piece!
